Keeping Your Business Safe From Fires
While many people think of ways to protect their home from a fire, they do not consider how to keep their business safe from the same hazard. On any given day, your business is full of many employees and customers, and a fire can put all of their lives in danger. Keep these fire prevention tips in mind to help keep everyone safe at your company.
- Clear out clutter – cluttered hallways and offices can make it much more difficult to escape if a fire breaks out. Clutter can also easily add to the fire, especially paper debris. Clean up anything that is taking up space in your office and make sure to regularly take out the trash. Emergency exits should never be blocked with any type of clutter.
- Properly use power strips and extension cords – never overload power strips and extension cords. Overloaded cords and power strips can easily start a fire with one simple spark. Before you plug in any device, double check the ratings to ensure that they are being properly used. Keep in mind that extension cords are not rated for extended use and should only be used in temporary situations.
- Maintenance – all equipment should be regularly inspected and maintained. If you find any frayed wires or other potential fire hazards, quit using the piece of equipment immediately and replace it with a new product. Flammable liquids and materials should be kept away from any outlets or electrical circuit boxes and properly stored and labeled.
- Smoking – have designated smoking areas that are at least 15 feet away from your building. Provide the proper cigarette trash receptacles to ensure that a smoldering cigarette butt does not start a fire.
