College Student Insurance
The back-to-school season is here, and if you are sending your child off to college, you may not know quite how to feel. While you are proud of them for reaching such a great milestone, you are probably also anxious because you will not be able to see them every day. Knowing that your teen is protected with the right insurance policies while away at college can help to give you the peace of mind that you deserve.
To help keep your child safe while at college this year, keep these tips in mind.
- Create a college inventory – make a list of all of the items that your child is bringing with them to colleges, such as their laptop and clothes. The inventory should also include an estimated value of each of the items to help make the claims process as smooth as possible after fire, theft, or any other covered peril.
- Talk to your insurance agent – your existing homeowner’s insurance policy will provide a limited amount of coverage for all of the belongings that your child brings with them while living in a college dorm. Talking with your agent can give you a better idea about whether you should increase your coverage or not.
- Check your auto insurance – if your child is bringing a car with them to college, you will want to make sure that they are covered with the right car insurance policy. If they are not taking their car, you should still keep them on the policy in case they decide to use the car when they come home on weekends or holidays. If they are going to school more than 100 miles away from home, you may be able to qualify for a distant student discount to help save money.
