Conserve Water Through the Drought With These Tips

    By Young Insurance | Archives, Home | Comments are Closed | 9 June, 2015 | 0

    Home Drought Tips

California is still experiencing one of the worst droughts in history, which makes it more important than ever to make sure that you are doing your part to save water. Keep these home drought tips in mind to conserve water at your house while also helping to lower your water bill.

    • Location, location, location – when planting new plants in your yard, make sure to carefully consider where you are planting. Figure out the different “microclimates” in your yard, from sun drenched areas to shade covered corners, and plant the right plants in the right areas.
    • Consider your soil – take a look at your soil and its attributes. If you have dry soil that does not retain water very well, consider adding more organic matter to your garden. Clay soils retain much more moisture, so consider adding some clay deposits as well.
    • Plant strategically – group plants that have similar watering needs together in the same area of your yard so that you can water more efficiently. Avoid planting your plants in rows, and opt for blocks instead since it will help to shade the roots and reduce the amount of evaporation.
    • Mulch it up – adding a thick layer of mulch around your soil can help to significantly reduce the amount of evaporation, allowing you to water less often. Mulch also helps to fight against weeds which can suck up the water that your plants need to thrive. Organic mulches will help your garden look its best.

While working to save water at your house, it is also a good time to look at your homeowner’s insurance coverage to make sure that your house is properly protected from any peril that may occur through the drought. Contact Young Insurance in Burbank, California for all of your home insurance coverage needs.
