Memorial Day
Happy Memorial Day from all of us at Young Insurance! Memorial Day is a holiday that is meant to remember all of the service men and women who have given their lives while serving the country. Throughout the country, flags will all be flow at half mast, and then raised to full staff as a tribute to service members who are still living.
Memorial Day was started to help honor the Union soldiers that died during the American Civil War. The holiday was inspired by traditional ways that people in the South honored their dead. After World War I, the holiday was extended to honor both service men and women who have given their lives.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, and its current name was not brought into use until after World War II. Memorial Day was historically held on May 30th, no matter what day of the week that fell on. With the passing on the Uniform Holidays Bill in 1968, which was passed to create three day weekends, Memorial Day is now celebrated on the last Monday in May.
To help people recognize the true meaning of the holiday, the National Moment of Remembrance resolution was passed in December 2000. This resolution calls for every American to find their own way to show remembrance and respect by pausing whatever they are doing for a moment of silence at 3 p.m. local time.
All of us at Young Insurance in Burbank, California would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of our service men and women across the country.
