Recent reports from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation are showing that men are starting to live longer than they have previously. According to data collected from 1989 to 2009, a man’s life expectancy increased by 4.6 years. This increase is the start of men catching up to women and narrowing the gender longevity gap. It might be time to sit down and review your portfolio to ensure you have enough to last during your retirement, especially knowing men are now expected to live longer than they have in the past.
What is the cause for the increased longevity? The leading cause for the increase is that men are starting to live healthier lives than they have in previous generations. There are fewer men who smoke and more men are taking care of their bodies by exercising and eating right.
Even with the improved and healthy lifestyle, women are still expected to outlive men. However, the difference now is only a few years. A big difference than it was more than 20 years ago.
