Tips for updating your home inventory.
January is the month we experience a surge of motivation to get all of our ducks in a row. While you are reviewing your insurance policies this New Year, it’s wise to think about updating your home inventory, too. Not only is a home inventory vital for insurance, but it also helps you get organized and keep your home in order. Since it’s Get Organized Month, take a look at these tips on how to update your home inventory.
- Update on a Yearly Basis
If you’re on top of things, you may want to make it a habit to update your home inventory each time you sell/donate/buy items. At a minimum, aim to update your home inventory at least once a year. January is a great time to do this because you will have all of your holiday gifts in hand and hopefully a receipt or two to go with them.
- Move Room by Room
The easiest way to update a home inventory is often done by moving room by room, examining the items currently listed in each space. Then, scan the list of items and the photos to determine what additions, deletions, or corrections need to be made.
- Highlight Valuable Items
Especially note valuable pieces you’ve had for a long time, but are not necessarily using. Do online research and estimate what you could sell the pieces for. If you haven’t had the pieces valued in a while, consider taking them to an appraiser.
- Update All Copies
Now that you’ve conducted your home inventory, it’s important to save it and replace the older versions. Use a safe-deposit box or an online cloud-based storage system to keep your home inventory and all supporting documents safe.
