Keeping your house safe while you go on vacation.
Your suitcase is packed and you’ve printed the airplane ticket. You’re almost ready to enjoy your long-awaited vacation. During the midst of planning and packing, did you remember to protect your home so that it is safe while you’re away? Nothing spoils a vacation more than coming home to find you’ve become the victim of a crime. Those hard-earned hours of relaxation will be quickly undone if you have to start filing a claim on your home insurance. Here are some tips to prepare your home for your departure.
Hide signs that you’re going away.
Nothing says that you’re away like a full mailbox and newspapers on the driveway. Consider giving a trusted neighbor or friend a spare key so that they can pick up the mail every couple of days. Additionally, position the window blinds and curtains like normal, and make sure the grass is freshly cut. You don’t want to attract lingering eyes by exposing the sign that you are not home.
Create the impression you’re still home.
Buy timers for your lights so that they turn on and off at specific times of the day, giving the impression you’re home. While you’re at it, turn the phone’s ringer on silent so that people cannot hear that the phone is not being picked up.
Unplug everything.
Make sure your appliances (except for your faithful fridge/freezer) are unplugged and not left on stand-by. Not only does this reduce the risk of fires, but it can also save you money on your utility bills.
Don’t broadcast your plans.
Many of us like to brag on social media when we have a trip booked – but this could be a big mistake. Anyone can look on social media pages and find out that you’re away and will be away for 2 weeks. Instead, post all of your vacation pictures when you’re back home.
