Tree Maintenance Tips for a Healthy Yard

    By Young Insurance | Archives, Home | Comments are Closed | 27 September, 2018 | 0

Prevent property damage by keeping your trees in good condition.

The trees in your yard can enhance your property, provide shade, and offer numerous environmental benefits. However, trees can also pose a safety hazard to your family and your home if they are not cared for. Now that we are approaching fall and adverse weather is ahead, now is the time to tend to your yard to ensure your trees are safe and healthy.

    • Prune Trees

It is wise to prune trees to prevent weak or loose branches from falling in a storm. However, over-pruning can weaken a tree over time. For this reason, it’s best to call out an expert to evaluate the condition of your trees. If there are any dead or dying trees, a professional should remove them from your property.

    • Consider the Roots

Make sure that your tree’s roots are kept safe. Ensure cars don’t drive over or park in the root zones of trees, and make sure that people don’t habitually walk over the same area. Never pile soil over the roots of trees or around their trunks. Mulch is better for the trunk area as this allows moisture to reach the roots, but aerates the soil.

    • Check for Tree Damage

Keep an eye on your trees so that you can spot diseases and trouble signs early on. If you do, you can prevent it from toppling over on your property and causing significant damage. Here are a few things to look for that indicate bad health:

    • Trees that lean to one side significantly
    • Trees that are hollow or decayed
    • Branches that cross with others
    • Trees that have cracks in the trunk
    • Mushrooms growing in the soil, indicating a weak stem
    • Tree limbs that touch power lines
    • Branches that hang over the house or near a roof of a home
