Take advantage of the holiday deals by buying a reliable used car!
Whether you’ve been on the hunt for a second-hand car for a while or you’re eyeing up the ‘certified pre-owned’ vehicles in the holiday sales, you’re not alone. Plenty of commuters want to purchase a reliable, used car that will get them from point A to point B, no bells and whistles required. While this is a great idea to save a few dollars here and there, buying a car with hidden problems can wear your wallet out quicker than you thought!
To avoid purchasing a proverbial lemon, here’s what to look for when buying a used car.
Walk around the car.
Check the interior upholstery for rips and stains, and the exterior for dents, scratches, and damage. Even if the car isn’t in tip-top cosmetic condition, don’t be put off making the purchase. It’s under the hood that counts: a dirty and rusted engine can be a strong indication that there may be trouble down the road.
Insist on test-driving it.
It’s always best to take the car for a test drive on both local roads and highways. In different environments, you’re able to get a good feel for how the car responds and performs. Check the brakes and turns on local roads, while testing the engine and speed on the freeway. Make sure to note any unusual engine noises and whether or not all the electronics in the car are working properly.
Perform a leak test.
When you’re out on the test drive, park in a clean area of the road and let the car run for 30 seconds. Then, move the vehicle and do a visible inspection for any leaking substances. Bear in mind it could be oil, antifreeze, or transmission fluid.
Look for safety.
Check that the tires are the ones recommended by the manufacturer, the seatbelts are undamaged, and that the airbags have not been tampered with. Keep safety in mind throughout the test drive and physical inspections.
Inspect the Vehicle History Report.
A vehicle history report can help you reveal title problems, ownership history, service points, and previous accidents, large or small. These reports can be available from dealers or ordered online.
